In a segment on ABC’s “The View” on Wednesday, Meghan McCain said that part of what makes a nation is its ability to secure its own border.

After stating that she’s been a longtime supporter of comprehensive immigration reform and that she believes in the poem inscribed on the Statue of Liberty that welcomes immigrants seeking a better life, McCain said that’s not in conflict with border security.

“I also believe that we are a nation of borders and laws, ” she said. “A nation that cannot control its borders is not a nation, according to Ronald Reagan.”

She also criticized the way the Trump administration is handling the situation along the border, but added that what he’s doing shouldn’t surprise anyone.

“What President Trump ran on is what he is enforcing,” she added. “I think that when Jeff Sessions says this, you can’t be surprised that when you have the most hard-line immigration candidate of my lifetime — who runs on hard-line immigration and the economy and ends up winning — that this is what happens. It’s why voting is so important. And I think sometimes when we’re in a beautiful studio in Manhattan that it’s easy to forget what’s going on on the border.”

In response, her co-hosts said that the Trump administration’s decision to enforce immigration laws on the books is new and different.

“The law has always been, asylum seekers would be welcome,” Whoopi Goldberg said. “And to just blatantly say ‘We’re not gonna do it’ seems very different to me.”
