3 Reasons Why We Should Get Rid of Supreme Court Confirmation Hearings

I think it’s time to seriously consider getting rid of these hearings for Supreme Court nominees. The Constitution doesn’t require a hearing. All it says is that the Senate must give advise and consent.

You can do that with a simple up-or-down vote. And let’s be real: Do we really think one senator’s vote is going to be changed after these four days of hearings?

Here are three examples of why I think these hearings have become useless.

No. 1: Senators are asking both unanswerable and, frankly, nongermane questions. READ MORE...

Secretary Azar Discusses the Road to a Better Health Care System

Watch The Daily Signal’s interview with Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar above, or read a lightly edited transcript of the conversation below.

Genevieve Wood: Secretary Azar, thank you very much for sitting down with The Daily Signal.

Secretary Alex Azar: Glad to be here, thanks.

Wood: Appreciate it. You head the Health and Human Services Department, and the issue of Obamacare and health care has been a huge issue for the country for many years now. But it’s kind of seemed like it’s fallen off the radar screen, in terms of news coverage. READ MORE...

Media Avoids Texas Shooting Because Students Oppose Gun Control

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, says students from the high school near Houston where the deadly shooting occurred told him they don’t believe more gun control is the way to make schools safer.

In an interview in his Senate office Tuesday with The Daily Signal, Cruz said support for the Second Amendment in Texas is why CNN and other media outlets aren’t giving these students the kind of wall-to-wall coverage that followed the school shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Cruz also talked about why the Senate should work full workweeks and potentially skip the August recess to get more done. From making tax reform for individuals and small businesses permanent to repealing Obamacare’s employer mandate, the Texas senator said plenty of legislative priorities could be passed with a simple majority and Republicans should take advantage of the relatively rare opportunity of being in charge in Washington. Ben Carson on Draining the Swamp, Fighting Poverty, and Kanye West

Genevieve Wood: Secretary Carson, thank you for talking with The Daily Signal.

    Ben Carson: Absolutely. My pleasure.

Wood: So you’ve been in office now a year and a half almost, right?

    Carson: Almost.

Wood: Coming up on it. What have been the biggest challenges for you at HUD? READ MORE...

  • 'America's Back' Because of Tax Cuts

‘America’s Back’ Because of Tax Cuts

House Ways and Means Chairman Kevin Brady, R-Texas, sat down with The Daily Signal to talk about the historic tax reform package passed by Congress and the impact it will have, and in some cases already is having, on individuals, families, and the economy. On the midterm elections, Brady says the key question voters should ask themselves is whether they want to go back to the old tax system—which is what he believes Democrats will try to do if they win a majority—or to keep pushing for further reforms. 3 Reasons the Left Hates Scott Pruitt

You know why they are going after Environmental Protection Agency secretary Scott Pruitt?

I can give you at least three reasons.

No. 1: He has led the Trump administration’s efforts to dismantle President Barack Obama’s expensive and ineffective climate legacy piece by piece.

From the Clean Power Plan, which was all about Obama’s climate agenda and which had nothing to do with creating clean air (we already have laws about that), to the Waters of the United States regulation, which could turn a puddle in your front yard into environmentally-protected swamp land—Pruitt has been rolling back many of the regulations put in place by Obama’s overzealous, power-grabbing, and arguably unconstitutional EPA. A Perspective You Won’t Get From the Mainstream Media

Thousands of people descended upon Washington, D.C. for the first-ever March for Our Lives, an anti-gun march following February’s horrific shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida.

The Daily Signal went to the march and spoke with attendees.

“I try to keep an open mind and I’ve looked at some of the data and I don’t think that what they’re arguing for is going to be necessarily effective,” one conservative college student says.

“You see so many people here, they say ‘we don’t want to take people’s guns away, we don’t want to confiscate them,’ meanwhile we see people here with signs that say ‘I wish Obama people took guns away.’ Or they propose the Australia gun buy back program here in the U.S. where guns will be confiscated by the government.” READ MORE...
